"Healthcare Is A Right, Not a Privilege"

Home: Welcome

About Us

Student Healthcare In Practice (SHIP) is a UCI undergraduate organization that primarily staffs and oversees a free healthcare clinic in Orange, CA. We strive to not only bring awareness to the socioeconomic disparities in healthcare, but also to directly make a difference in the healthcare industry by serving underserved communities and providing quality healthcare for free. Additionally, we create an environment for our volunteers to grow both professionally and personally. Our volunteers at the clinic are able to receive hands-on experience by assisting doctors and allied health professionals, assisting with front and back office tasks, translating for patients, and connect to a community of like-minded pre-health and dental students. No role is too small and we excell in a variety opportunities to make a difference for our patients. Together, our SHIPmates strive to show that healthcare is a right, not a privilege.

Announcement of Termination of Partnership

For the past seven years, Student Healthcare in Practice (SHIP) has provided Crescent Clinic with quality volunteering services for the under-resourced patients in the local community. With the help of SHIP, Crescent Clinic was able to achieve new milestones, such as expanding the medical services offered, safely and successfully transitioning to Telemedicine and Dial-in appointments during the COVID-19 pandemic, starting dental services to patients, and moving clinics to the new fully funded locations in Fullerton and Rowland Heights. Over the past few years of our partnership, SHIP has contributed significantly to Crescent Clinic (over this past year alone, covering roughly student-raised $10,000 on clinic-related equipment), created medical and dental patient education articles and media content, flyered in outreaching efforts in nearby venues to raise awareness of the services the clinic provides, distributed free hygiene kits and food bags for patients, implemented toy drives, assisted with vaccine volunteering events, and more. With the help of our volunteers, we were able to staff multiple days of shifts to provide our services to those who need it most in our community. All of the milestones that SHIP and Crescent Clinic have accomplished have only been possible with the help of various Crescent Clinic staff and our fellow SHIPmates. Although it is bittersweet to announce the termination of SHIP’s staffing of Crescent Clinic, we are thankful and appreciative of the time spent at Crescent Clinic, in which our volunteers were able to grow as students and as future healthcare providers who will continue to uphold our mission statement that healthcare is a right, not a privilege as we embark on our journey to actively fight against healthcare disparities throughout our careers.

This is the very mission that Student Healthcare in Practice (SHIP) strives to uphold throughout our clinical volunteering and committee projects. Over this past quarter, our student board has been working towards implementing our new partnership with Lestonnac Free Clinic, located in Orange. Lestonnac Free Clinic, which was founded in 1979, is a local free clinic in California with over 14 active satellite clinics, aiming to provide free health care services of various specialties such as general practice, dermatology, and podiatry to financially vulnerable and uninsured residents in Southern California. We are excited to announce SHIP’s new partnership staffing the main Lestonnac Free Clinic site, located in Orange, alongside residents, medical students, nurses, and other healthcare providers. Through this partnership, we hope to continue upholding our SHIP standards of professionalism, positivity, compassion for others, and providing a healthy environment for student growth.
